CGEN Engineering has been awarded the Clean Superpower: NetZero Award at the SETsquared Partnership Investment Futures 2025 event inLondon.

The award recognises businesses developing technologies andservices that can contribute to the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

CGEN was selected following a public vote involving thewider SETsquared community.

The recognition reflects CGEN’s work to develop modular electrical generators for wind, wave, tidal, hydro and other renewable energy applications.

CGEN’s technology is designed to reduce the cost and complexity of manufacturing, transporting, maintaining and repairing large electrical machines. The modular architecture allows individual generatorsections to be removed, repaired, remanufactured or replaced without necessarily replacing the complete machine.

This approach could be particularly valuable for offshore and remote renewable energy systems, where access, downtime and heavy-lift operations can represent a significant proportion of lifetime cost and risk.

The award also reflects the support CGEN has received through the Innovate UK ICURe and SETsquared networks during its development from university research into an independent spin-out company.

Through ICURe, the founding team was able to test the commercial opportunity for the technology, speak directly with potential customers and partners, and better understand the challenges faced by renewable energy developers and operators.

That work helped shape CGEN’s initial business model and supported the decision to form the company.

Since spinning out of the University of Edinburgh, CGEN has continued to develop its technology through customer projects, Innovate UK funding, Horizon Europe programmes and marine energy demonstrations.

CGEN exhibited at Investment Futures 2025, where the team met investors, founders, programme partners and other organisations working across the UK innovation ecosystem.

The company was represented at the event by Managing Director Joe Burchell and Chelsea Nickles.

The Clean Superpower: Net Zero Award follows CGEN’s recognition as both Scottish and UK National Cleantech StartUp of the Year2025.
