About

Engineering the future of clean energy.

Our mission is to be a world leader in generator technology for the renewable sector: empowering the clean energy transition, supporting circular economy principles and securing long-term sustainable power generation for the planet.

By engineering modular, scalable and durable generators, we are lowering costs, reducing environmental impact and enabling affordable and sustainable energy. There is currently no UK-based supplier of large direct-drive generators.

We see a future where renewable energy systems are easier to build, operate and maintain, transforming how clean energy is generated.

Milestones & achievements

  • Multiple prototypes designed, built, and successfully demonstrated in real-world environments.
  • Commercial deployments with Mocean Energy, Instream, Roth Turbines and Ladco.
  • Active partner in EU Horizon MEGA WAVE PTO and Innovate UK-funded projects.
  • Developing multi-MW system designs for wind sector expansion.
  • TIDEGEN project with University of Swansea to establish a UK-based supply chain and accelerate the adoption of tidal energy.

Our Journey

CGEN Engineering Ltd is a spinout company from The University of Edinburgh, founded by experts in renewable energy, generator designs and manufacturing. Built on 15+ years of research and development, CGEN is now commercialising its patented modular  electro-magnetic drivetrain generators for a wide range of renewable energy applications.

The technology has progressed significantly, achieving a Technology Readiness Level (TRL) of 7-8, supported by four successful commercial demonstrators and six key industry collaborations.

Our leadership team

Dr Joseph Burchell is a co-founder and Managing Director of CGEN Engineering Ltd. He has completed InnovateUK's ICURe Program and was instrumental in commercialising CGEN technology. He has over 8 years' experience in renewable energy as a Research Fellow at the University of Edinburgh and has led the design, build, and testing of tidal and wave energy systems, including large-scale test rigs.

Prof Markus Mueller is a co-founder and Technical Director of CGEN Engineering Ltd. He has 27 years' experience in renewable energy, specifically electrical engineering and generator design, working closely with industry. Markus holds a Royal Academy of Engineering Chair in Emerging Technologies, and a Chair in Electrical Generation Systems at the University of Edinburgh. His research has led to two spin-outs, and he is the inventor of C-GEN technology, holding 2 patents in generator technology.

Mike Galbraith is a Co-Founder and Manufacturing Director of CGEN Engineering Ltd. He has over 25 years of expertise in machine design, build, and manufacturing processes, and over 15 years' experience building CGEN generator test rigs and University demonstrators.
