CGEN named UK National Cleantech StartUp of the Year 2025

CGEN Engineering has been named UK National CleantechStartUp of the Year 2025, following its success at the Scottish regional UKStartUp Awards earlier this year.

The national award marks an important milestone for CGEN, coming almost exactly one year after the company completed its spin-out from the University of Edinburgh.

CGEN is developing a new generation of modular electrical machines for renewable energy applications. Its technology is designed to make generators lighter, easier to manufacture, maintain and repair, and better suited to reuse and remanufacture throughout their operational life.

Unlike conventional electrical machines, CGEN generators are built using modular, replaceable sections. This approach is intended to reduce manufacturing complexity, simplify transport and installation, and allow individual parts of a machine to be serviced without replacing the complete generator.

The technology is being developed for applications across wind, wave, tidal, hydro and marine propulsion, with a growing focus on extending the life of existing wind turbines and reducing the cost and risk associated with large offshore machines.

Winning the national award follows a year of significant progress for the company, including the delivery of Innovate UK and HorizonEurope projects, expansion of the engineering team, deployment of CGENtechnology in a marine environment and the development of new commercial opportunities across the renewable energy sector.

The award also recognises the work of the wider CGEN team, project partners and supporters who have helped move the technology from university research towards commercial deployment.

CGEN was announced as the Scottish regional Cleantech StartUp of the Year in June before progressing to the UK national awards.

Being named the national winner provides further independent recognition of CGEN’s approach and its ambition to make renewable energy systems easier to build, maintain, repower and operate over longer lifetimes.

The company will now continue developing its technology through larger generator projects, field trials and collaborations with renewable energy developers, manufacturers and supply-chain partners.
