EU Horizon: MEGA WAVE PTO

Developing the next generation of modular power take-off systems for wave energy

CGEN Engineering is a core partner in the EU-funded MEGA WAVE PTO project, working alongside 11 organisations across Europe to deliver a breakthrough in wave energy conversion. The project is focused on designing, building, and testing a scalable, reliable, and maintainable all-electric power take-off (PTO) system suitable for devices ranging from kilowatts to multi-megawatts.

Project Overview

MEGA WAVE PTO brings together leading technology developers, academic institutions, and industrial partners to accelerate wave energy commercialisation. CGEN’s role centres on the design and supply of its modular permanent magnet generator, which forms a key part of the all-electric PTO system. By integrating innovative control, monitoring, and modular architecture, the project aims to improve efficiency, reduce maintenance costs, and extend device lifetimes.

Objectives

  • Develop and validate a modular all-electric PTO suitable for multiple wave energy device types.
  • Prove scalability from small-scale kW demonstrators to MW-class systems.
  • Demonstrate improved reliability and reduced cost of ownership for developers.
  • Build a pathway towards manufacturable, certifiable PTO solutions for the marine sector.

Why it matters

Wave energy remains one of the most untapped renewable resources. MEGA WAVE PTO will show that modular, all-electric PTO systems can deliver the performance, resilience, and cost-effectiveness needed for commercial adoption. For CGEN, the project builds directly on its proven generator technology, positioning the company at the forefront of enabling the wave energy industry to move from demonstration to large-scale deployment.
